1. Engine Shutdown

When you turn the key off:

• The valve closes

• Fuel supply stops

• Combustion stops

• Engine shuts down

Without stopping fuel flow, a diesel engine especially would keep running.

2. Safety Protection

If there is:

• An accident

• Engine overspeed

• Fire risk

• Oil pressure failure

The fuel shutoff valve can cut fuel immediately to prevent damage or danger.

3. Prevent Fuel Leaks

When the engine is not operating, the valve helps prevent fuel from continuously flowing through the system.

4. Emergency Stop Function

Many industrial machines and generators use fuel shutoff valves as part of their emergency stop system.

Pressing the emergency stop:

• Cuts electrical power to the valve

• Closes fuel supply

• Stops engine instantly

5. Theft and Security (Some Systems)

Certain vehicles use electronic fuel shutoff as part of anti-theft systems.

If the key or immobilizer is not recognized:

• The valve stays closed

• Engine will not run

1. Engine Cranks but Won’t Start

• Starter turns the engine

• But engine never fires

If the valve is stuck closed, fuel cannot reach the injectors.

2. Engine Starts Then Immediately Dies

• Engine runs for 1–3 seconds

• Then shuts off

This often happens when:

• The solenoid briefly opens

• Then loses power

• Valve closes and cuts fuel

3. Sudden Engine Shutdown While Driving

• Engine dies without warning

• No sputtering beforehand

Could indicate:

• Intermittent solenoid failure

• Loose wiring connection

• Overheating valve

4. Engine Will Not Shut Off (Less Common)

• Key turned off but engine keeps running

If the valve is stuck open, fuel continues flowing.

(More common in older diesel mechanical systems.)

5. No Fuel at Injectors

• No fuel pressure

• Dry fuel lines

• No fuel spray

Indicates valve may not be opening.

6. Clicking Noise but No Start

• You hear a click when turning key

• But engine won’t start

The solenoid may be activating electrically but not opening mechanically.

7. Electrical Fault Codes (Modern Systems)

• Check Engine Light

• Fuel control circuit codes

• Voltage or solenoid fault codes

8. Rough Running or Stalling

If the valve is partially stuck:

• Engine may hesitate

• Fuel flow may be restricted

• Power loss under load
