An ABS Brake Pressure Modulator Valve 88935631 is the hydraulic control component of the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) that regulates brake fluid pressure to each wheel. It is also called an ABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), ABS Hydraulic Block, or Brake Pressure Modulator Assembly. Brake Pressure Modulator Valve For GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe 1999-2006 -  Refurbished & Tested – 100% Working Condition.

Purpose & Function (ABS Brake Pressure Modulator Valve)

1. Prevents Wheel Lock-Up

  • During hard braking, a wheel can stop rotating and begin to skid.
  • The modulator valve rapidly adjusts brake pressure to that wheel.
  • This allows the tire to maintain traction with the road.

2. Controls Brake Pressure Electronically

The ABS module sends commands to the modulator valve, which can:

  • Increase brake pressure → apply more braking force.
  • Hold brake pressure → maintain current braking force.
  • Decrease brake pressure → release pressure from a locking wheel.

3. Maintains Steering Control During Emergency Braking

  • Locked wheels reduce the driver's ability to steer.
  • The ABS modulator keeps wheels rotating so the driver can avoid obstacles while braking.

4. Improves Vehicle Stability

The modulator valve supports:

  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC/StabiliTrak)

It can apply or reduce braking force to individual wheels to help maintain vehicle stability.

5. Provides Fast Pressure Adjustments

  • The valves can cycle brake pressure many times per second.
  • This creates the familiar ABS brake pedal pulsation during activation.

6. Maintains Proper Brake Balance

  • Controls pressure between different wheels.
  • Helps prevent over-braking of one wheel or axle.
  • Improves stopping performance.

Signs of a Bad ABS Brake Pressure Modulator Valve

1. ABS Warning Light Stays On

  • The ABS computer detects a hydraulic fault.
  • The ABS light remains illuminated after startup.
  • A scan tool may show valve, pump, or pressure-related fault codes.

2. Traction Control / Stability Control Warning Lights

  • The Traction Control (TCS) or Electronic Stability Control (ESC/StabiliTrak) lights may turn on.
  • These systems depend on the ABS hydraulic unit to control individual wheel braking.

3. ABS Does Not Work During Hard Braking

  • Wheels may lock up during emergency stops.
  • The vehicle may skid because the hydraulic valves cannot regulate brake pressure.

4. Incorrect ABS Activation

Symptoms include:

  • ABS activates during normal braking on dry pavement.
  • Brake pedal rapidly pulses at low speeds when it should not.
  • ABS engages without a wheel slipping.

5. Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

A failing hydraulic block may cause:

  • Air or pressure loss inside the hydraulic system.
  • Inconsistent brake pedal feel.
  • Longer pedal travel before braking begins.

6. Hard Brake Pedal

Possible causes:

  • ABS pump failure.
  • Internal valve blockage.
  • Hydraulic pressure not being properly controlled.

7. Uneven Braking or Vehicle Pulling

  • One wheel may receive incorrect brake pressure.
  • Vehicle may pull left or right during braking.

8. ABS Pump Runs Frequently or Continuously

  • A stuck valve or internal hydraulic problem can cause the ABS pump to run too often.
  • May create a clicking/whirring noise.
  • Can drain the battery.

9. Brake Fluid Leakage

Possible signs:

  • Wetness around the ABS hydraulic unit.
  • Low brake fluid level.
  • Brake fluid odor near the ABS block.

10. ABS Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Common fault categories:

  • ABS pump motor faults.
  • Solenoid valve faults.
  • Pressure sensor faults.
  • Hydraulic unit performance faults.

Examples of codes may include:

  • C0110 – ABS pump motor circuit fault
  • C0121 – ABS valve relay circuit
  • C0265 – ABS relay circuit fault
  • C0245/C0246 – pressure control or valve-related faults
(Exact codes depend on vehicle manufacturer.)
