Purpose of using J87-6021:

  • Changes the direction of movement — converts the steering wheel's rotary movement into movement that turns the front wheels.

Signs of a Bad Steering Gear J87-6021:

  • Excessive steering-wheel play
    • You turn the steering wheel several inches before the truck responds.
    • This is one of the most common signs.
  • Loose or wandering steering
    • The truck doesn't hold a straight line.
    • You constantly have to correct the steering.
  • Steering feels hard
    • The steering wheel becomes unusually difficult to turn, particularly at low speeds.
  • Steering wheel doesn't return properly
    • After making a turn, the wheel doesn't naturally return toward center.
  • Fluid leaking from the steering gear
    • Power-steering fluid around the steering gearbox, input shaft, or output/Pitman-arm shaft can indicate a failed seal.
