Purpose of using 05-17799:

Function Description
1. Aesthetic cover Hides internal mechanical components (like the shifter linkage or transmission tunnel). Makes the cab look finished and clean.
2. Protection Prevents dirt, dust, and debris from falling into the shifter area. Protects cables or linkages underneath.
3. Safety Covers moving parts to reduce risk of snagging or injury.
4. Vibration isolation Often includes a rubber boot or seal to reduce noise and vibration.
5. Customization Chrome or color options may be available for appearance upgrades in truck interiors.

Signs of a Bad Shift Plate Cover 05-17799:

1. Visible Cracks or Breakage

The cover has cracks, chips, or is broken around the cutout area.
Often occurs due to frequent gear shifting, heavy vibration, or dropping tools on it.
Can become sharp or jagged, posing a safety risk.

2. Loose or Wobbly Fit

The cover moves, rattles, or feels unstable when touched.
Could indicate:
Broken or missing mounting clips/screws
Warped plastic or metal
Improper installation

3. Rattling, Vibrations, or Noise

A failed or loose cover may rattle at idle or while driving.
Especially noticeable in trucks with manual transmissions and engine braking.
Sometimes mistaken for drivetrain or dash noise.

4. Shifter Boot Pulling Away or Exposed Gap

The rubber boot around the shifter may no longer seal properly against the cutout.
You’ll see open gaps around the shifter where you shouldn’t.
May allow dirt, water, heat, or fumes from the engine bay or floor area into the cab.

5. Drafts, Odors, or Road Noise in Cab

A missing or damaged shift plate cover can allow air, sound, or smells into the cabin.
May be more noticeable in cold weather or at highway speed.

6. Excessive Wear or Fading

In older trucks, plastic shift covers may be faded, worn smooth, or even partially melted (in hot climates).
Chrome versions may lose finish or become pitted.
