Signs of a Bad Aluminum Shifter Plate 05-17811-254:

1. Loose or Wobbly Gear Shifter
The gear stick moves excessively, even in gear.
Indicates the plate is cracked, warped, or the mounting bolts have loosened.

2. Difficulty Shifting Gears
Gears feel misaligned, hard to engage, or require extra force.
A misaligned or bent shifter plate can throw off the linkage geometry.

3. Unusual Vibrations or Noise
You feel extra vibration through the shifter.
You may hear rattling when idling or driving.
Usually means the plate is loose, cracked, or not seated properly.

4. Visible Cracks or Damage
Cracks around bolt holes or structural stress points.
Often seen during inspection if the plate is removed or exposed.

5. Water or Dust Leaking Into the Cab
If the plate supports a shift boot, damage may cause leaks through the floor.
Common in trucks that operate in muddy, wet, or dusty conditions.

6. Missing or Loose Fasteners
Bolts backing out over time (especially in high-vibration environments).
This causes shift slop, plate movement, or eventual damage.
