1. Prevent theft

The steering shaft lock engages when the vehicle is off, making it impossible to turn the steering wheel without the correct key or fob.
This stops thieves from steering the car even if they try to bypass the ignition.

2. Secure the vehicle when parked

When the ignition is turned off:

• The steering column locks automatically (in keyless systems)

• Prevents unauthorized movement of the vehicle

• Adds a mechanical layer of protection beyond electronic immobilizers

3. Control steering-related electronic functions

The steering column module manages:

• Turn signals

• Wipers

• Headlight switches

• Steering wheel controls

• Communication with the airbag module
  This centralizes driver-control electronics in one module.

4. Sync with ignition and keyless entry systems

The module works with:

• Keyless start systems

• Immobilizer

• Body Control Module (BCM)

1. Steering wheel won’t unlock

• The wheel stays locked even when the correct key or key fob is used.

• You may see warnings like “Steering Lock Active” or “Steering Unlock Fault.”

2. Vehicle won’t start

A failing steering lock or module may prevent the ignition system from enabling the start sequence, especially in push-to-start vehicles.

3. Key fob not recognized / ignition issues

• You insert the key or press Start and nothing happens.

• The vehicle may think the steering is still locked.

4. Steering wheel locks while driving (rare but dangerous)

• A severe malfunction can cause momentary binding or locking sensation.

• This must be repaired immediately.

Because the module communicates with the airbag system, malfunctions may trigger the SRS warning light.

8. Noise from steering column

Clicking, grinding, or buzzing can indicate a mechanical issue with the shaft lock motor or locking pin.

9. Steering column not adjusting

If equipped with electronic tilt/telescoping, it may stop working or only work sometimes.
