Function What It Does
Fuel Management Controls fuel injection timing and amount
Ignition Timing Optimizes spark timing for power and efficiency
Idle Control Maintains stable engine idle under all conditions
Emissions Control Works with O2 sensors, EGR, etc., to reduce emissions
Turbo / Boost Control (diesel or turbo engines) Manages boost pressure safely

Signs of Bad Engine Control Module

  1. Check Engine Light (CEL)

    • Comes on unexpectedly

    • May store unrelated or confusing error codes

  2. Engine Misfires or Poor Performance

    • Hesitation, stalling, rough idle, or surging

    • Weak acceleration or random power loss

  3. Hard Starting or No Start

    • The engine cranks but doesn’t start

    • Or starts and immediately dies

    • No injector pulse or ignition spark

  4. Bad Fuel Economy

    • ECM may send incorrect fuel/air mix

    • Over-fueling or under-fueling conditions

  5. Transmission Shifting Problems (if TCM is integrated)

    • Erratic or harsh shifts

    • Stuck in a single gear

  6. Failed Emissions Test

    • If ECM can't regulate emissions, O2 sensors, or EGR

  7. Electrical Gremlins

    • Random warning lights

    • Intermittent loss of gauges or dashboard functions

  8. Unable to Communicate with Scan Tool

    • If ECM is dead, it won’t respond via OBD-II/CAN
