Description:
An Exhaust Air Pressure Valve (EAPV) 20512834 is a valve used on some diesel engines to create backpressure in the exhaust system. The exact purpose depends on the engine and vehicle application. Engine Brake Air Valve D12, 12V For Volvo Truck: VHD, VN, VT, Volvo Bus: B13R

Part Number: 20512834
Condition: New
Manufacture/Brand: Volvo

Fits 20512834 For Volvo Engine D12

Volvo Truck: VHD, VN, VT
Volvo Bus: B13R

Purpose of using 20512834:

  • Engine braking
    • The valve partially closes the exhaust flow when the driver activates the engine brake or exhaust brake.
    • This creates backpressure in the engine, helping slow the vehicle without using the wheel brakes.
    • Common on heavy-duty trucks such as those from Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks.
  • Faster engine warm-up
    • During cold starts, the valve can restrict exhaust flow slightly.
    • This increases engine load and raises engine and exhaust temperatures more quickly.
    • Faster warm-up improves cabin heat and reduces cold-start emissions.
  • Emissions control
    • On engines equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the valve helps raise exhaust temperatures for regeneration (burning off accumulated soot).
    • It can also help manage exhaust gas flow for emissions systems.
  • Improved engine operation
    • Some engine management systems use exhaust pressure as part of their overall air-flow and emissions strategy.
    • The valve helps maintain desired pressure levels under certain operating conditions.

Signs of a Bad Engine Brake Air Valve 20512834:

1. Weak or No Engine Braking

  • Engine brake/exhaust brake doesn't slow the vehicle as effectively as before.
  • Vehicle gains speed more easily on downhill grades.
  • One of the most common symptoms on heavy-duty trucks.

2. Check Engine Light or Fault Codes

The engine control module may detect:

  • Incorrect exhaust pressure
  • Valve position errors
  • Solenoid circuit faults
  • Air system pressure faults

3. Loss of Engine Power

If the valve is stuck partially or fully closed:

  • Engine may feel sluggish.
  • Poor acceleration.
  • Reduced turbocharger performance.
  • Increased exhaust backpressure.

4. Poor Fuel Economy

A malfunctioning valve can affect engine efficiency and emissions-system operation.

5. Excessive Exhaust Backpressure

Symptoms may include:

  • Higher exhaust temperatures.
  • Increased turbo stress.
  • Reduced engine performance.

6. DPF Regeneration Problems (Diesel Engines)

On vehicles equipped with a DPF:

  • Frequent regeneration requests.
  • Failed regenerations.
  • Increased soot accumulation.
  • DPF-related fault codes.

7. Air Leaks

For air-operated valves:

  • Hissing sounds near the valve or solenoid.
  • Loss of air pressure.
  • Engine brake works intermittently.

8. Valve Stuck Open

  • Little or no exhaust braking.
  • Slow engine warm-up in cold weather.
  • Reduced ability to raise exhaust temperatures when needed.

9. Valve Stuck Closed

This is usually more serious:

  • Significant power loss.
  • Excessive smoke.
  • High exhaust temperatures.
  • Engine may struggle to reach normal RPM.
