Purpose of using 3908803:

1. Support the Cooling Fan

The fan support:

  • Holds the fan hub and shaft

  • Keeps the fan centered

  • Prevents wobbling during rotation

This is critical because engine cooling fans are large and heavy, especially on diesel trucks.

2. Maintain Proper Alignment

It keeps the fan aligned with:

  • The radiator

  • The fan shroud

  • The drive belt or gear system

Proper alignment prevents:

  • Belt wear

  • Bearing damage

  • Vibration

3. Support the Fan Clutch (If Equipped)

On many heavy-duty vehicles (such as those from Freightliner Trucks or Volvo Trucks), the fan support also holds the fan clutch assembly.

The fan clutch mounts directly to the fan support shaft.

4. Reduce Engine Vibration Stress

The fan support contains bearings that:

  • Allow smooth rotation

  • Absorb rotational forces

  • Reduce stress on engine components

5. Ensure Proper Engine Cooling

Without a stable fan support:

  • The fan may not pull air correctly

  • Cooling efficiency drops

  • The engine may overheat

Sings of Bad Engine Cooling Fan Strut Support 3908803
:

1. Fan Wobbling

  • Cooling fan visibly shakes while spinning

  • Fan blades look uneven

  • Movement side-to-side when engine is running

This usually means worn internal bearings.

2. Grinding or Growling Noise

  • Noise coming from front of engine

  • Gets louder with RPM

  • Sounds like a bad wheel bearing

Worn fan support bearings commonly cause this.

3. Squealing or Chirping Noise

  • High-pitched noise

  • May change with engine speed

Can indicate:

  • Failing bearings

  • Misalignment affecting the drive belt

4. Excessive Vibration

  • Front of engine vibrating

  • Shaking felt in cab (heavy trucks especially)

A loose or worn shaft can cause imbalance.

5. Overheating Engine

If the fan support is failing:

  • Fan may not spin properly

  • Airflow through radiator decreases

  • Engine temperature rises

6. Belt Wear or Throwing Belts

On belt-driven systems:

  • Belt frays quickly

  • Belt squeals

  • Belt jumps off pulley

Misalignment from worn fan support causes this.

7. Play in the Fan Shaft (Manual Check)

With engine OFF:

  • Grab the fan

  • Try to move it forward/backward or side-to-side

If there is noticeable movement, bearings may be worn.

8. Oil or Grease Leakage

Some fan supports are grease-lubricated:

  • Visible grease leaking

  • Dry or rusty bearing housing
