• Hydraulic Pressure Generation:

  • When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder’s pistons push brake fluid through the brake lines.

  • This fluid pressure is transmitted evenly to each wheel’s brakes.

• Even Brake Distribution:

1. Spongy or Soft Brake Pedal

• The brake pedal feels soft, squishy, or sinks slowly to the floor when pressed.

• This happens when internal seals in the master cylinder are worn or leaking, allowing fluid to bypass the pistons instead of building pressure.

2. Brake Pedal Sinks or Slowly Drops

• If you hold the brake pedal down and it slowly sinks toward the floor, it’s a classic sign of internal fluid leakage in the master cylinder.

• The system can’t maintain pressure, which is dangerous and needs immediate attention.

3. Brake Fluid Leaks

• Fluid leaking from where the master cylinder mounts to the brake booster or around the reservoir indicates a failing seal or crack.

• Low fluid levels in the reservoir may also point to a leak.

4. Brake Warning Light On

• The brake warning light (or sometimes ABS light) can come on if the system detects a drop in brake pressure or low fluid level, both of which can be caused by a bad master cylinder.

5. Poor Braking Performance

• The brakes feel weak or require much more effort to stop the car.

• The master cylinder might not be generating enough hydraulic pressure.

6. Contaminated or Discolored Brake Fluid

• If the fluid looks dark, murky, or full of debris, the internal rubber seals in the master cylinder may be deteriorating, contaminating the fluid.

7. Uneven Braking or Pulling

• A faulty dual-circuit master cylinder can cause one circuit (front or rear) to lose pressure, leading to uneven braking or the car pulling to one side when you brake.
