Description:
A Throttle Valve Body 4941673 in a vehicle is a hydraulic control mechanism inside an automatic transmission that adjusts shift timing and transmission line pressure based on engine load (throttle position).

Purpose of using 4941673

1. Control Shift Timing

The throttle valve increases hydraulic pressure when you press the gas pedal.

  • Light throttle → Early, smooth shifts

  • Heavy throttle → Later, firmer shifts

This keeps the vehicle from shifting too soon when you need power (like during passing or climbing hills).

2. Regulate Line Pressure (Protect the Transmission)

The TV system controls line pressure, which applies the internal clutches and bands.

More throttle = more pressure
More pressure = stronger clutch holding power

Without proper pressure:

  • Clutches slip

  • Transmission overheats

  • Internal damage occurs

3. Match Transmission Behavior to Driver Demand

The throttle valve makes the transmission responsive to driving conditions:

  • Gentle driving → Smooth, fuel-efficient shifting

  • Aggressive driving → Delayed, performance-oriented shifting

4. Replace Electronic Control (Older Vehicles)

Before electronic transmission control modules existed, systems like:

  • GM 700R4

  • Ford AOD

  • Chrysler TorqueFlite

used throttle valve systems to mechanically control shift behavior.

Signs of a Bad Throttle Valve Body 4941673

1. Late or Delayed Shifting

  • Transmission stays in gear too long

  • High RPM before upshifting

  • Feels like it “won’t shift”

Cause: TV pressure may be too high or the valve is sticking.

2. Early or Soft Shifting

  • Shifts into higher gears too soon

  • Sluggish acceleration

  • Feels like it lacks power

Cause: TV pressure too low.

3. Harsh or Hard Shifts

  • Jerky gear changes

  • Feels like being hit from behind when shifting

  • Very firm engagement

Cause: Excessive line pressure from a stuck or misadjusted throttle valve.

4. Transmission Slipping

  • RPM increases but vehicle speed doesn’t

  • Feels like it’s not fully in gear

5. No Upshift / Stuck in One Gear

  • Won’t shift out of first or second

  • Acts like it’s in “limp” mode (older vehicles don’t call it that, but behavior is similar)

6. Burnt Transmission Fluid

  • Dark fluid

  • Burnt smell

  • Overheating

Low TV pressure can cause clutch slip and overheating.

7. Poor Kickdown Response

  • Press gas but no downshift

  • Slow reaction when passing
