1. No Power or LED Lights

The unit doesn't power on when plugged into:
Vehicle diagnostic port (J1939, J1708, etc.)
USB port on your computer
Status LEDs (Power, Communication, Fault) stay off or show error codes (e.g. flashing red)

2. Not Recognized by Diagnostic Software

Tech Tool (PTT) or Volvo Premium Tech Tool doesn't detect the VOCOM II
Error: “No communication unit found” or “Communication tool not available”
Interface shows up as “Unknown Device” in Windows Device Manager

3. Failed Communication with Vehicle

Interface connects to your laptop, but cannot connect to the truck
ECU or module scan fails
Shows CAN bus or J1939 errors
May display error messages like:
"Failed to read data from control unit"
"No communication with vehicle"

4. Frequent Disconnects

Intermittent or unstable connection between the laptop and vehicle
Drops connection during parameter programming or live data logging
May reboot or freeze mid-session

5. Overheating or Burning Smell

The device gets abnormally hot
May emit a burning smell or heat from internal components (sign of internal short or capacitor failure)

6. Shorts Out the Diagnostic Port

Plugging it into the truck causes voltage spikes, blown fuses, or vehicle ECU errors
Might trip truck's diagnostic port fuse if the VOCOM has internal faults

7. Accessory Issues

One or more cables (USB, 9-pin Deutsch, OBD, etc.) may be damaged or internally shorted
Faulty cables can mimic a bad VOCOM—always test with a known good cable
