Purpose:

When you're driving a truck with a trailer:

  • The tractor supplies air to the trailer's brakes through gladhand connectors (red = emergency, blue = service).

  • If the trailer disconnects, or loses pressure, air would otherwise escape from the tractor — disabling brakes on both tractor and trailer.

The Tractor Protection Valve:

  • Seals off the tractor’s air system to prevent air loss

  • Automatically applies trailer emergency brakes if air pressure drops too low

  • Allows control over trailer brake supply and emergency lines

Signs of a Bad Tractor Protection Brake Valve:

Tractor loses air when trailer disconnects

Trailer brakes don’t engage during emergency
Air constantly leaks from gladhand connections
Trailer supply knob doesn’t pop out on pressure loss
Fails leak-down or build-up test during DOT inspection
