1. Driver applies brakes

• You press the brake pedal

• Brake pressure (hydraulic or air in trucks) is sent toward the wheels

2. System monitors wheel speed

• Sensors at each wheel send data to the ECU

• The ECU checks for rapid deceleration or imbalance

3. Detects potential wheel lock

• If a wheel is about to stop spinning too fast → risk of skid

• ECU recognizes unsafe slip using anti-lock braking system logic

• Calculates how much pressure that specific wheel should have

This is the core purpose:

• Hold pressure (pause increase)

• This adjustment happens many times per second

• Keeps wheels in the ideal grip zone using slip ratio

1. ABS warning light comes on

• First and most common sign

• The system detects a fault and disables the anti-lock braking system

• Brakes still work, but without ABS protection

2. Stored fault codes (diagnostics)

• Scan tool shows ABS-related codes

• Common issues:

  • Valve malfunction

8. Wheels locking under braking

• Major failure symptom

• Especially noticeable on:

  • Wet roads

  • Emergency stops

• Indicates the system isn’t regulating pressure at all

9. Brake dragging or not releasing (serious)

• A stuck valve can:

  • Keep pressure applied to a wheel

• Leads to:

  • Overheating brakes

  • Reduced fuel efficiency

  • Potential brake damage

10. Complete modulator/ECU failure

• No communication with the unit

• ABS system fully disabled

• Possible impact on overall braking performance (in heavy trucks)
